Your gut microbiome is comprised of trillions of microorganisms that live in your digestive tract. These play a part in digesting the food you eat, absorbing and synthesising nutrients and get involved in many other important body processes like your metabolism, weight management and immune system.
It is definitely possible to have a healthy gut on a vegan diet, but like any other way of eating, there are so many factors you need to consider in order to achieve this. Simply eliminating animal products is not enough - you need to ensure that you are still consuming a variety of nutrients, particularly those rich in fibre, that can support a happy gut. Consuming a healthy balanced vegan diet rich in vegetables, legumes, fruit, wholegrains, nuts and seeds will help you achieve a healthy gut while following a vegan diet.
