Netflix docuseries Rotten exposes fraud and corruption in agribusiness

The Netflix original docuseries, Rotten delves deep into the heart of the food industry, where over the past 50 years "food has turned into a commodity to be traded like a stock or a bond. With money to be had, there will be fraud in the marketplace." Often with little regard for the health effects on those who eat it.

The first part debuts today, January 5, and produced by Zero Point Zero, the six-part docu-series responds to a growing demand of people wanting to know the story behind the food they buy.

A review from Paste Magazine sums up the issues:

"Every industry the show examines, from garlic to cod to honey to chicken, is suffering, and creating suffering, because it is, like a lot of American grocery shoppers, morbidly obese. Vertical integration and monopolies are creating hideous conditions for animals, screwing farmers, in almost all cases messing with the already desperately unbalanced ecosystems of the planet and in some cases sickening or killing consumers."

While the show exposes fraud and corruption in agribusiness, including spotlights on carnist industries such as, fish, and honey, there is no indication that they are going to address the ethical, environmental or health issues of eating animals.
